9:20 Keynote New Opportunities for Research in the “Lost World” of Location-based Services.

The wave of location-based technologies that emerged in the past decade appears to eventually crystalize. Services like Foursquare, Uber, Google Places or Facebook Local are now establishing themselves, transitioning from the phase of being experimental online services, to a new stage of maturity where they become profitable through accessing new revenue streams. However, the advances in geographic information systems and related technologies have the potential to disrupt industries that have been historically operating in more traditional terms and, put in other words, have not been classically perceived as typical examples of high-impact players in the digital age. In this talk, we will embark on a journey that explores research opportunities emerging in the “hidden realm” of location-based services. We will review examples, present insights and discuss empirical findings emerging in these forgotten domains. In this setting, we will discuss the opportunities arising through the analysis of spatio-temporal epidemiological traces – being collected for decades through our national health systems – as well as review routing strategies for emergency vehicles that operate in dynamically evolving urban systems. Furthermore, we will discuss our experiences from developing two mobile apps that are used to enable efficiency for passengers and drivers alike in the domain of taxi transport.
